This Companion is about questions such as: why is it that the immune system functions as a unity? How are immune functions coordinated?

Here, an attempt is made to develop a viewpoint to answer these questions. By using the 4-step approach, the factual knowledge obtained through current scientific methods is placed in a larger perspective.

The concept that is presented in this Companion is derived from observing organisms in the way that was originally introduced by Goethe. This leads to insight into the concept that the immune system functions a unity.

The entire organism can then be seen as an expression of this concept as well.
